Project Type: Residential

Location: Carbondale, Illinois

Sofware: Revit, AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator, Lumion

The parameters of this project were to design a home for a local retired professor who had bought property at a nearby lake. Another of these parameters is that the shape of the house had to be confined to a 21' by 21' by 21' cube. However, this cube could have minor additions or subtractions made to it to slightly change the shape. The design presented here took inspiration from split level homes and created a multi-level home that had little to no interior walls. Instead, spaces were divided by the levels that make up the house and connected by a series of stairs for access. These levels also helped to occupy the upper space without making each level feel small and cramped. At the entry level was the kitchen/dining room that had stairs leading both up and down. down the small steps from there was a living room space and bathroom that was nestled under the stairs that led up to the bedroom from the entry level. This bedroom level also leads up to a small private reading room at the uppermost level of the home. this level also contains a small balcony facing the lake. These levels go up round the perimeter of the home creating a space in the center of the home that goes from the bottom to the top at which a skylight sits, letting light into the entire home.
