Project Type: Community

Location: Chicago, Illinois

Sofware: Revit, Grasshopper, Photoshop, Illustrator, Lumion

The goal of this project was to create a circulation that took users around the site so that they could experience all that there was to offer. This building is separated into two circulations, one functions as a communal garden and green house, and the other as a farmers' market and retail area. The purpose of setting apart the two circulations is to separate the bustling market from the relaxed garden area. The design features two levels of circulation, the green house, which is on ground level and the main communal area, which is level with Roosevelt Road. The motive for having the greenhouse at the site entrance is for pedestrians to have a positive first impression of the site due to the enjoyment of experiencing nature as they walk through the site. The raising of the main level of this building to Roosevelt is to accommodate for the heavy pedestrian traffic above and to flow into the communal experience of the garden and retail areas. This effectively creates a piano nobile within the design, which also accommodates the pedestrian traffic coming from Roosevelt.
The structure features a double skin system held by a connecting space frame with supporting steel structure underneath. Within the double skin system is a translucent ETFE membrane allowing light to enter the building indirectly.
